Behind the Bag: What Goes into Sourcing Seasonal, Local Produce

Jul 01, 2025admin Green Tomato

Sourcing seasonal, local produce is one of the core pillars at Green Tomato. In a city rooted in culture and community, these connections feel even more meaningful.

When Green Tomato was founded in 2021, our intention was simple: to connect the people of Miami and Broward with real food—grown in real time—without the plastic, chemicals, or excessive carbon emissions from long-distance transport.

But the question remained: Why was there so little access to the beauty and abundance of Florida’s farms?

Through research and genuine, on-the-ground relationships, one farm owner’s connection led to another. Local businesses support each other, each recognizing their strengths and sharing resources. We’ve been fortunate to build lasting relationships with the farms we work with. Visiting these farms and spending time with their workers has been a liberating experience—one that reminds us we’re all driven by the same passion.

Instagram has helped us broaden our reach, giving us a platform to spotlight the people and land that make all of this possible. Right here in Florida is all the wellness and abundance we’re often told is out of reach—yet it’s been here all along.

When it comes to logistics, every step—timing, freshness, product selection—shows how interconnected this process really is. When you subscribe to Green Tomato, it allows us to communicate directly with our farm partners about how much produce we need each week (by Monday, or Wednesday at the latest). From there, we plan the bags and budget, and everything is ready for assembly by Friday—when we pick up the produce. Deliveries then begin the following week, Monday through Thursday.

Eating with the seasons isn’t just about flavor—it’s about connection. It connects us to the land, to the people who grow our food, and to a more sustainable, intentional way of living. When you eat what’s in season, you’re getting produce at its peak—fresher, tastier, and more nutrient-dense. At Green Tomato, we’re proud to be part of a food system that’s rooted in place, purpose, and people.
